Jim Morning

July 24, 1929 - June 26, 2008

Many of you already know about the passing of Kevin's father. He had been in a nursing home with Alzheimer's for a year and a half so his death was not a surprise. Still, it has led to a lot of reflection on my part. What can I do - what kind of lifestyle can I live to make my life as healthy as possible? What kind of legacy do I want to leave my loved ones? What would I like someone to reminisce about at my funeral? What kind of funeral would I like? (I am thinking a simple pine box with no embalming. I am a gardener after all - just plant me!)

I love the pine box idea. I've been saying it for years. Simple, inexpensive and reminiscent of times gone by. I do want 6 pallbearers to carry me out and none of the wheeling nonsense, I want to be up on their shoulders.

Cremation also makes sense, but I'd rather have pallbearers.

From an environmental perspective I like Angel Laura's idea. Cremation takes approx four hours - think of the energy it takes to combust a human body (and the resulting emissions). And no biomatter being returned to our precious planet. Embalming and the follow on toxic storage procedure - a lot of places require your casket be placed in a concrete vault to keep the chemicals out of the soil/water - again lots of energy/resources used with no return to the biomatter.

I think the gardener is on to something.
